My work is a hybrid, influenced by design, Minimalism, the history of abstract painting, Aztec imagery, Native handwork, Mexican-American and popular culture. I transform everyday materials such a cardboard, string, and paper towels into colorful abstractions. Because these materials have little perceived value, there is freedom to imbed culturally specific references within the work. As a Mexican-American artist I’m interested in the freedoms and limitations imposed on artists of color. In my work, I navigate the border between genres in order to question limitations and broaden the possibilities. Mixing cultural signifiers with abstraction and popular culture I create work that can be read as pure abstraction or identity-based art or both.
